The Unexpected Color Combo That’s Popping Up All Over #NYFW

Seeing an abundance of rose quartz, one of two of Pantone’s Colors of the Year, during New York Fashion Week doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. What does though, is its unexpected color pairing. Instead of pitting pastel with pastel, designers have given the sweet shade a refreshingly offbeat attitude with one of the brightest colors on the spectrum: yellow, in every shade under the sun.

For fall, designer Ulla Johnson embraced chartreuse, a.k.a. one of the trickiest colors to wear, thanks to its sulfur-ish, green-ish tint. But next to pink, there’s a degree of surprising wearability, such as spotting a pair of velvet pink overalls that buttered up the harsh yellow shade (above, left). At Creatures of Comfort, designer Jade Lai lit up dusty rose separates with a blindingly bright canary yellow turtleneck (center). And at Marissa Webb, the designer created a new color altogether when she layered a filmy, sheer purpley-pink dress over a marigold yellow number. The effect? Pleasantly cool.
